Pickin’ in the Plaza

Steep In hit up another of this cities free events featuring local beer and a few banjo tunes.  Pickin’ in the Plaza in conjunction with Oak City 7 make up a summer concert series held every Thursday in the Plaza.  Pickin’ in the Plaza, as the name suggests, is the part of the series that focuses on bringing in local and regional bluegrass and folk artists to the City Plaza on Fayetteville St.  Every other Thursday,  Oak City 7 sets up in the Plaza.  OC7 doesn’t stick to any particular genre but instead features artist of all styles.  We can thank Pinecone and Deep South Entertainment for organizing these event for us to enjoy free of charge.

Thursday July 14 got started with the sounds of Honey Magpie,  a Triangle based Folk group.  This group brought some sweet harmonies to the Plaza and got our toes tapping to some fiddle tunes.  After Honey Magpie got the crowd warmed up with their songs, including a plucky number about the Ugly Duckling, Ellis Dyson and The Shambles came on stage and changed the pace.  This self proclaimed “Gypsy Swingin’ Dixie Jazz band” from Chapel Hill certainly jazzed up the bluegrass show.  The sun went down and a breeze rolled through, to cool down the Plaza, just in time for Ellis and his boys to get us to our feet for a lighthearted romp.  I found it hard to keep my feet still long enough to take a few pictures.

Be sure to make it out next Thursday for another great show featuring Orquesta GarDel, Debonzo Brothers, and Lemon Sparks.
